This particular “tradition” or “trend” was supposedly created by a wedding photographer who got “bored” with traditional wedding shoots and wanted to do something different.  And somehow it caught on.  A wedding photographer wanting to do something different with a wedding shoot makes sense.  After all, it must get boring taking the same type of photos and getting the same requests wedding after wedding.  This is where it stops making sense.

  • Wasting money. Wedding dresses are ridiculously overpriced to begin with.  If you spent a lot on something, there is an inherent reason to protect your investment.  For example, you wouldn’t purchase something expensive for a party and then destroy it when that party is done.  No one gets a new TV that will first be unveiled during a Super Bowl party and then destroys it when the Super Bowl is over.  Although wedding dresses aren’t necessarily something that are made to be reused (which adds to why spending a ridiculous amount on it makes no sense), at the very least it could be sold to recoup some of the initial investment.
  • Not thinking about your partner. Just because one person wants to wreck their clothing, that doesn’t mean that the other person would like to as well.  Wedding dresses usually aren’t rented, however, many grooms will rent their wedding attire.  Unless both people purchased their wedding attire with the intention of destroying it after the fact, the pictures probably won’t turn out as well as they could.
  • Weird and awkward pictures. Considering that many men need to return their wedding attire, the pictures that result when only the bride is destroying her dress turn out to be very awkward.  If you search for this concept on Google, many of the pictures show a woman with a dirty or otherwise destroyed dress while her man stands in the background or to the side.  Or sometimes it shows a woman in a damaged wedding dress sitting by herself in nature.  Without knowing the intention of the photo and what was being accomplished this type of picture is somewhat depressing.
